Nerida or Mahina?

Today I have in my possession this composition doll, my first compo doll of color.

She came from SeaPillowTreasures on Etsy, and she's in great shape except for her arms and legs.  I need to restring her.

She's a cute little doll, with a delightfully saucy face and three tufts of thread hair.

All of my other composition dolls have molded hair and/or a wig, but this doll augments her molded hair with rooted hair and is thus my first compo doll with that feature.

She's just your basic little baby doll that charmed her into my life, and now she needs a name.  I like two names, and I hesitate to give her both of them since they rhyme a bit.

*NERIDA:  Nerida is a Greek name meaning "sea nymph," and also an Australian Aboriginal name meaning "water lily."
*MAHINA:  Mahina is the Hawaiian word for "moon" and the name of ancient Hawaii's lunar goddess.  One of Australia's worst tropical cyclones was named "Mahina."

Based on my fondness for historical weather disasters, y'all probably would think I'd name my doll "Mahina" and be done with it.  However, I love the name "Nerida" too, because it's so unique, kinda like the doll herself.  Y'all helped me name Madison Renee years ago, so I trust y'all's judgement.

Now I'm gonna restring this young lady and turn her into the cutie pie that she always was.  Don't wait up!

Cheers,

Beach babies, for real this time

Happy first day of summer, ladies and germs!  Natalie and Gracie may not have had their timing right, but Kissy and Adam know when to trot out the sun clothes!

Too bad I can't name a beach anywhere near here that is good for dolly pictures.  My dusty backyard, with its copious molehills and sand burrs, will have to suffice.  Seriously, I like to joke with my mom and my neighbors that I have more moles than I do yard, and my dogs are not vermin-hunters so they're no help.  The good news is that I made it out into the yard without dropping Kissy, who could probably not stand such a fall.  She's a big doll, but not very robust.  Today she's wearing flamingoes.

Flamingoes are special to several of us here in Malden, as they represent a friend that we lost to cervical cancer a couple years back.  For some reason this friend loved flamingoes, and every time I see a flamingo I think of her.  Combine flamingoes with a yellow background and you've got the perfect summer getup.  This outfit is too big for Kissy, by the way, just like the watermelon dress is.  I think the crotches of these dresses are big to accommodate a diaper, but Kissy doesn't have one so that's that.  I just get a safety pin and pin everything up out of sight.

Eternally happy Adam is wearing a tie-dyed onesie from Cranky Baby Tie Dye, and a pair of pants from DudisDesign, because who wants to wear a onesie without pants???

A baby's wardrobe simply isn't complete without at least one tie-dyed piece, and as luck would have it, some of Cranky Baby's items come in Kissy's size.  But where I'll find a pair of bell-bottoms in her size, I'll never know.  But then again, Adam isn't wearing bell-bottoms.  His gray leggings make his tummy bulge a little, so next time I order a pair of these I'll go up a size.

So my babies are ready for summer!  It's only become honest-to-God hot in the past week, and even then it wouldn't have been so bad if the humidity weren't high.  I've been out on ninety-degree days with low humidity and it was downright pleasant, but when the humidity is high ninety degrees is miserable.  I loved the rain that we had during the first week of June, but it only made the humidity and the mosquitoes worse.  C'est la vie when you live in a swamp.  I complain, but I wouldn't trade living in the Bootheel for the world, and I don't think my kiddies would either.  Adam's seen a few other places, and I think he's happy anywhere as long as he's got a lap to sit on.  As for Kissy, she told me she prefers it here.  Being a doll, the heat and the mosquitoes don't bother her.

Stay cool,

Dolly mixture

The other day I shared a picture of Lindsay and Teenie Talk tumbled together in each other's arms.  Well today this is what my bed looked like before I headed off to work.  From left, they are Chatty Cathy, Adam, grumpy little Anita, and Sally.

Cathy is a little miffed that I didn't share her on World Doll Day, so here she is now.
She's pretty proud of that new dress, which came from CCandGDolls and is half of a set of two frocks.  The one one is blue.

Life has not been as kind to Sally, as she is now bald in addition to having a messed-up face.

Life is rarely kind to composition dolls, but Sally has aged the worst of all.  I look forward to getting her repaired, but I don't know when that'll be.

Just wanna warn y'all, more posts of this random variety may be in the works, as I arrange and rearrange my dolls, organize and disorganize their things, all that whatnot.  So if you're not a fan of how my dolls fall together on the bed, feel free to skip these.  I WILL have more reviews, but those posts take time.  Hopefully next week I'll have a full-scale review ready.

Cheers and love to all,

By pure dumb luck

This post ties in with yesterday's, as it involves the same two dolls.  I had been playing with both Teenie Talk and Lindsay, and I set them on my bed to go brush my teeth.  I came back and realized that I'd tossed them together like this.
I can't prove that I didn't pose them like this deliberately, but...I didn't pose them like this deliberately.  Lindsay is a motherly type, and Teenie Talk eats that up with a spoon.  They look so comfortable, just like I wish I could be right now.  Seriously, that bed looks more and more comfortable all the time.

Stay comfy,

Another doll named Lindsay, plus a friend

What does a visit from the mail truck mean for the denizens of Casa del Luna?  Well in this case it meant playtime for kitties, because I got two big boxes!  Chessie couldn't sit still!

For the Moon Girl herself it meant the busting out of scissors to open the boxes, and then perusing the contents.  Here's what I got yesterday.

The big rag doll is named Lindsay (not to be confused with my other Lindsey, who has an "e" in her name rather than an "a"), and her smaller companion is a Mattel doll named Teenie Talk.  Lindsay has an interesting story, as she is one of Tam's...highway dolls, I think she called it?  It was a tub that Tam's husband found by the highway, and it was FULL of dolls.  Some of them got pretty badly damaged, and some were just wet and/or a little dirty.  Several of these dolls are still looking for homes (original post is here), and I voiced an interest in Pollyanna and Lindsay.  Tam wants to keep Pollyanna, which I understand, but she was happy to send Lindsay to me, so here she is.  As you saw above, she's a big doll (Luciana apologizes for her undies showing, by the way).

I love rag dolls, and Lindsay is a big one indeed!  I love her face!

She reminds me of someone, but I'm not sure who.  Her hair is painted...

...as are her boots...mostly.  The laces are applied.  Either way I'll neither have to provide shoes or worry about her losing the ones she's got, and I'm glad of that.

Her rear shows her name and a number, which I assume is a production year.

If that is indeed a production year then she's just a little older than me.  While I was examining Lindsay I found this tag attached to her back.  I was hoping it might provide some info about a maker, but it doesn't.  All it tells me is that Lindsay has been bounced around a lot during her thirty-six years of existence.

So Lindsay is obviously not a super-old doll, and I have my doubts about whether she was intended to be a toy, but her maker is a big question mark.  If any of y'all have any information on this lovely young lady, please let me know.  I'll also be asking my friends on my old nemesis Facebook for information, as the folks there can be quite helpful...when they're not getting butt-hurt, that is!  Any information I get will be shared here with all of y'all, and of course I send my warmest gratitude to Tam for sending her to me.  Thank you so much, Tam, and thank you for sharing your experience with the coronavirus shot.  I personally have been hesitant to get the shot, but I'm hearing more good experiences than bad so I may take the plunge.  As Tam herself noted, we've gotta stop this somehow.

Now let's look quickly at Teenie Talk.

Teenie is also larger than I thought she'd be.  I made sure to pull Astro-Luci's skirt down this time.

I thought Samantha was sensitive about her skivvies showing, but Luciana almost has her beat!  Anyway, Teenie is one of Mattel's many pull-string talkers, and I'm not going to say too much about her right now.  Her post will come in August.

Much love to all,

Baby birds

Not doll-related, but I think it's cool so I'm sharing.  Every year barn swallows build a nest in the eaves of Mama's carport, and this year I finally got a good picture of the babies.  They look like they're very close to flying.

There are five of them, but the fifth one, barely visible on the right, appears to be very ill.  The others look quite healthy, and I figure that nest will be empty before too long.  Mama Bird was not the least bit happy with my presence so close to her nest, by the way.  Poor Mama Bird, I wish I could tell her that we mean her family no harm, but I can't, so I just took one picture and split.

Keep in mind that if these guys build nests in your eaves, they are very defensive and produce large quantities of crap.  However, they also eat mosquitoes and other obnoxious insects, so they're worth having around.

Cheers and bird feathers,

Little Gracie returns

On this rainy afternoon my little doll buddy came to the library, and she brought Little Gracie with her.  Now just as a reminder, I can no longer bring my dolls to the library (like Justine-Marie hurt anyone), but my patrons can.  Little Gracie is about the same as she was when I last saw her, with her hair disheveled and her face dirty, but she's happy so that's what matters.  She's also got a nice new outfit on and I love that.

My friend was quick to point out Gracie's new shoes, which are nice.

Oh, how nice it would be to get a picture of Gracie and Adam together!  I don't have Adam with me, of course, but I was able to show my friend a picture and she fell in love.  I wonder if a Lee Middleton baby will be in her future???  I dunno, but Adam and Gracie would make a cute pair!  I need to see if I can find something tie-dyed for Gracie, the way I have for Adam.  That way the two could be friends in spirit, even though they've never met.

Stay dry,
