Sweet summertime

Just like the Bob Seger song I love.  Daddy always said that "Night Moves" made him think of Mama, because the girl in the song was "a black-haired beauty with big dark eyes."  That's about all their relationship had in common with the song, however, as Seger's amorous couple were nothing more than friends with benefits.  Anyway, I love that song, and even during the hottest months I often refer to summer as sweet summertime.

This summer is not quite to the level of Barbie Summer, back in 2023, but some of the dolls up for release are pretty darn awesome.  By coincidence, the three that I'm talking about today are also either themed or named after something good and fattening.  These first two are variations of the same doll, an American Girl dressed like Peaches 'n' Cream Barbie.  This first one reminds me a lot of my Doremi.
The other one has eyeshadow that's a little heavy-handed, but she's still pretty.
Now...for the uninitiated, Peaches 'n' Cream Barbie was released in 1984, and she looked like this.
I'm a product of late 1987 so this doll wasn't one of my childhood friends, but I love that soft, peachy-pink dress.  I think the AG doll captures the overall look very well.

The other doll is also Mattel and also candy-themed, but that's where the similarities end.  She's Twyla Boogeyman, and she's this year's ComicCon exclusive
I won't be going to a ComicCon anytime soon for a number of reasons, but I can still ogle from afar!  Now ComicCon has had a number of exclusive Monster High dolls through the years, but this particular doll caught my eye because she's an extension of the Sweet Screams line.  I freaking loved the Sweet Screams line, with its garish colors and candy theme.  I desperately wanted to complete the set, but alas, I only have Draculaura...somewhere.  But hey, I have Draculaura from that set!  Some folks wanted her and didn't get her.  Draculaura and Frankie Stein were the first two, and I actually saw these at Target (that was when I obtained Draculaura).  Frankie appears to be hard candy-themed, while Draculaura looks like she's wearing...ewwww, licorice!
The next wave, which I DIDN'T see in person, had Abbey Bominable and Ghoulia Yelps, both characters that I love.
Ghoulia went pretty heavy on the gummy candy, it appears.  I love gummy candy.  Mama hates the stuff, but I love it.  Abbey's theme is ice cream, fitting for a yeti who always has to be cold.  Longtime fans of Monster High may remember that G1 Abbey wore a crystal around her neck that kept her body cold.  Either way the revival of the Sweet Screams line has me excited.  I hope that maybe there'll be a revival of this line for the G3 bunch.

Mmmm, now I want something nummy to eat, LOL!  I've lost fifty-three pounds since February of '24, so the cake and ice cream will have to be kept to a minimum, but by George, when my birthday comes I'm havin' CAKE!!!  But any way, these dolls are all bright and colorful and I love the snot out of them.  The American girls are unfortunately $275 and some change, and I've got an MRI to pay for in the near future, so these dolls are not coming home with me anytime soon.  But as I said above, I can admire!

Regarding my hip, I do have an MRI scheduled for early on July 2nd, and...that's all I know ATM.  I'll keep y'all posted on that too.

Warm regards,

Throwback Thursday review: Costume Bash Jade

RagingMoon1987 again, and this review is about a Bratz doll that I've had awhile.  Costume Bash Jade made her debut here in 2014.  Unfortunately for her, a large sack of older Barbies also made an appearance so Jade was promptly upstaged and her promised review was forgotten.  Three years later, she's finally getting her review!
The Costume Bash line was a small set of Bratz dolls consisting of Jade, Yasmin, and Cloe.  All three were old-style heads placed on the "Psst...I'm Taller" body.  I originally wanted Cloe, but when presented with the chance to get Jade on sale I said "phooey, I'm going for her."  Jade is my favorite character anyway, so it all works out.  These tall dolls were released shortly before the Bratz went on hiatus, so I don't know how many of them were made.  Today's flop could be tomorrow's collector's item, but I digress.  Here's my Jade.
According to what I've read online, Jade is supposed to be dressed as a gingerbread girl.  That motif is not immediately obvious; I was thinking of a candy girl, given MGA's apparent fondness for candy-themed dolls during 2014.  But first things first.  Let's look at Jade's hair.
Jade's hair is made of nightmare nylon.  If it were loose it would probably hang down to her knees but since it's mercifully braided it falls a little shorter.  The hair is mostly white, with some red streaks thrown in, and all of it is braided or twisted...or kinked from the packaging, as nylon hair loves to do.  The largest braid is a rope braid that sticks off to one side, like so.
Two smaller rope braids are tied up into a large bun on the left side of Jade's head.
On the right side of Jade's head is a second, much smaller bun, and this in turn is decorated with a vinyl gingerbread cookie.
The tail end of this bun hangs loose and loves to stick out in strange directions.  I may have to braid it so it'll stay in control.
Words cannot convey my hatred of nylon hair, but this stuff is styled well.  I don't dare take the style down though, because I'd never get it back up again.  The colors don't scream gingerbread either.  They remind me more of peppermint, a flavor that I like but don't usually associate with gingerbread.

Moving on, Jade has the typical Bratz face.  Since she was released before the most recent redesign, her head is a similar shape to the older dolls.
Okay, the heads aren't exactly the same; Costume Bash Jade has a slightly flatter nose than her raven-haired predecessor, and her ears look like they might be smaller, but there's not a lot of difference.  In keeping with the junk food theme, Jade's makeup palette is dominantly pink and sparkly like candy can sometimes be.  She has the classic Bratz eyes, complete with fierce eyebrows that give away her natural hair color, and sparkly eye shadow in a couple of shades of brown.
Her lips are your typical Bratz lips, large, puffy, and shiny.  No fish lips here; they'd been done away with by the time the taller dolls debuted.
Painted on Jade's left cheek is a sparkly pink heart.
Very typical of Bratz makeup, and not terribly unlike La Dee Doll makeup either.  Most of the Bratz that I've seen don't go this heavily on the glitter, but this is a costume party doll so she deserves a little extra sparkle, just as long as she doesn't get any in her eyes.  I used to wear cheap lip gloss with glitter flecks in it, and I know from bitter experience that glitter in one's eye can be intensely painful.  Don't ask how that lip gloss got into my eyes, by the way.  I can still hear Mama saying "Well boy, that took talent!"  LOL

I can't remember what comes next!  Body or clothes?  <pauses to consult past reviews> Oh, it's body review time!  Most of the Bratz I own are the shorter ones, measuring about nine inches.  Their height can vary depending on the shoes they're wearing.  The Costume Bash line has the taller body, and Jade's oversized head puts her at the same height as Barbie.
These tall Bratz don't just differ from their older, shorter siblings in height, though.  Their arms are longer and have joints.
My junk shop Cloe doll is one of those Movie Starz so she also has jointed arms.  However, Cloe's arms still are not the same length as Jade's, nor are they jointed in the same way.  Cloe has a joint in the middle of her upper arm, and Jade does not.
Jade's body is more flexible than that of the older Bratz dolls (except Cloe), almost to the level of a jointed Fashionista body like Sherralee's...but not quite.  Her arm joints are great...
...as are her hips.  Jade can do full splits, something that neither Sherralee nor most of my Bratz can do.
Jade's knees are not great at all.  As long as her legs are I'd expected her knees to be limber...but they're not.  They click twice,  but they only hold one position.  The leg on the left is extended fully, and the leg on the right is bent as far as it'll stay bent.
At the same time, Jade's legs are too soft to support her weight.  It was a constant struggle to keep her upright for this review, so rubbery are those limbs.  On the other hand, Jade's rubbery legs, loose hips, and pivoting shoe-feet allow her to cross her ankles.  Again, most of my other Bratz can't do that.
Jade's neck is stiff.  She can turn her head but not tip it.
Compare that to my first-wave Jade, who can both turn and tip her head.
By now it should be pretty obvious that Jade's tights are painted on.  I can't say that I'm a huge fan of that, but what choice did MGA have in this case?  Fabric tights were occasionally done for the earliest Bratz, but I don't think it worked too well.

Regarding the rest of Jade's threads, I think that of the three Costume Bash dolls, Jade's costume is the simplest.  There's a lot going on visually, but the overall outfit consists of one piece.
Oops, I forgot that neck piece.  So there's two pieces plus shoes.  The bodice...now this bodice looks legit.  It has that soft, textured look and feel that reminds me of fresh gingerbread.  It even has white ric-rac sewn on, which looks quite a bit like icing.
The iridescent heart is not a shape or color that I associate with gingerbread, but I like it.
This bodice looks strapless, but as with many other "strapless" doll dresses it has bits of elastic holding it up.
The skirt is made of stiff, shiny stuff that holds a shape well but has ZERO drape and feels cheap.  The material itself is hot pink, and it has sparkly gingerbread men and hearts painted on.
The hem is trimmed with a larger strand of iridescent ric-rac.
Jade's neck piece is made out of satin ribbon in the same shade of hot pink.  I like this fabric better than the stuff that the skirt is made out of.
Both dress and neck piece close with Velcro.
The rest of Jade's rather sparse accessories are red like the stripes in her hair and on her legs.  Bratz can and do wear big earrings, but given this doll's busy hair and makeup I'm grateful for her simple little studs.
Jade's shoe-feet are red ankle boots.  They're too small for the rest of her, I think.
According to stock pictures Jade should also have a brush, a purse, and a gift, but God only knows where I put those items.  They were just bits and bobs of plastic in shades of red and pink anyway.  I'm a bit dumbfounded by this outfit's color combination, by the way.  Jade has red and white hair, red and white tights, red earrings, and red shoes, but her dress and her makeup go heavy on the pink.  Why did MGA do that, I wonder?  Why didn't MGA go with just red and no pink, or just pink and no red?  I mean, the gingerbread men on the skirt do have tiny red bow ties, but they're not big or bright enough to justify red tights, red shoes, or red hair streaks.  Don't get me wrong, Jade doesn't look bad, but the color combination does make for a confusing getup.

Since Jade is one of the larger dolls I'm not sure what all she can wear.  Regular Bratz clothing is out, and I think Jade may be a bit too curvy for modern Barbie clothes.  It's worth a shot, though.
The outfit on the left is an old Fashion Avenue outfit, usually worn by Maggie, the doll that wouldn't get "smoof."  The skirt fits Jade quite well, but the top is too large and looks shapeless.  The other outfit is one of the Dolphin Magic outfits that I reviewed not too long ago.  It's a little tight around Jade's hips and a little loose around her chest, but not ridiculously so.  Jade's striped tights don't even look too bad with that second dress.

Unfortunately, those painted tights are going to be problematic in the long run.  They won't match anything that doesn't have red in it, and the spiral pattern will likely clash with any printed things I can grub up.  Jeans might work, but at the moment the only jeans I have that will fit Jade are being worn by Pilar.  As roomy as those jeans are, Jade might just be able to pull it off.
The jeans are indeed a yes.  They fit Jade better than they fit Pilar, in fact; every time I sit Pilar down in these jeans the snap pops open.  Jade doesn't have that problem, but she does have a different one.  That top is entirely too big.  It won't fit Jade unless I resize it, and I don't want to do that.

There's also a dress that I've been holding back for a Dolly Dress Discussion, one that belongs to Skipper.  It's red and white, so I'll give it a whirl.
Like the Dolphin Magic dress, this is a little tight around the hips and a little loose around the bust.  Jade's skivvies are also visible through the thin fabric and that's a bummer, but this dress still looks cute on Jade.  So these taller Bratz can wear modern Barbie dresses, old-style Barbie pants, and Teen Skipper clothes.  She may also be able to wear some of the other things I've got for slimmer dolls as well; Winx Club clothes look particularly promising.  But for now I'm just going to leave it at this and sum it up.

BAD
*Hair is made out of nasty old nylon
*Legs are rubbery and don't stay bent
*Neck is stiffer than other Bratz necks
*Skirt is made of stiff fabric that feels cheap and wants to snag on my fingernails
*Color combination is confusing.  This doll looks more like a candy girl than a gingerbread girl.
*Can't share clothes with the other Bratz or the Bratzillaz

GOOD
*Hair is attractive, even if it is nylon
*No fish lips!  Bratz dolls went through a period where they had lips that looked like fish mouths, but not this chick!
*Eye-catching.  I may find the color scheme confusing, but it also grabs my attention when I look at my group of Bratz dolls!
*Flexible, except for knees and neck
*Can wear some articles of Mattel clothing.  This expands Jade's potential wardrobe.
*Unlike the more recent wave of Bratz, this doll has the attitude and the aesthetic that fans of these dolls grew to love.

As much as I love Jade's character, I find myself wishing that I'd found Cloe from this line instead.  Having once been a hippie at heart, I could relate more to her retro-style costume than I can Jade's garish confection of an outfit.  Jade also has wobbly, rubbery legs, making it hard for me to pose her standing up, and her knee joints don't bend as I think they should, and her hair is made out of nylon.  She's not a bad doll though; for all her garishness she makes a convincing costume party participant, and her makeup is nice, and she can wear some clothes for other dolls (always a plus).  So I can't fault MGA Entertainment for giving it the old college try with this doll, though I would like to examine another of the tall dolls to see if they all have rubbery legs!

Quick update on my family.  Grandma is still in the hospital and is about the same.  She ate a little bit of yogurt and was forcing down a can of Ensure when we left her last night.  The rest of the family is half-expecting some sort of calamity today, as eleven years ago today my grandfather passed away in the same hospital, under highly similar circumstances, after a long decline.  That was back in 2006, and it was a Thursday, just like today is, so we're all a little on edge.  My mother on the other hand...my mother is getting very strong.  The physical therapist was impressed with her improvement on Tuesday, especially since Mama cancelled her appointments over the past two weeks!  First Uncle is driving down from St. Louis for the weekend, and I always enjoy seeing him, but the unpleasant truth is that he's coming down to "adult," as we all call doing unpleasant things.  I think the point of this trip is for Mama, my two uncles, and me to sit down and discuss funeral arrangements...just in case.  I don't look forward to doing this and neither do my family members, but it's got to be done...again, just in case.  As stubborn as Grandma is she may haul off and surprise us by living another ten years.  We'll just see.

Cheers,

Throwback Thursday review: Ashton-Drake's "Gimmie a Break"

RagingMoon1987 back with another discontinued doll for Throwback Thursday.  Most of my dolls are mostly toys, or were once intended as toys, and thus could hardly be considered dolls for high-end collectors.  This little feller that I've got today is an exception, though.  He's from Ashton-Drake Galleries, he's got an M&M's themed outfit, and he's entitled "Gimme a Break," a tagline that I associate more with Kit-Kat bars than I do M&M's.
A baby doll.  I don't have too many baby dolls.  Oh sure, I like babies and I like baby dolls, but my maternal instincts are few and my skills are naught, so I tend to gravitate towards dolls that resemble an older demographic.  This can be seen in the blog; I have only a handful of baby dolls, and until now the only ones I've photographed are Tommy and Sally (the Creepy Babies).  Oh yeah, I've also got a few other vintage babies, and that Lalaloopsy Baby that drops loads in its pants...Lordy, how could I forget that one?  But other than them I don't have too many baby dolls.  I like this little guy quite a bit, though.  When I say this doll is a little guy, I mean he's a LITTLE guy!  "Red," as I've chosen to call him, is seven inches in length from head to toe, and he feels like he's made of silicone.  Here's what a seven-inch baby looks like next to a Barbie (or a Barbie friend, rather)...
and in the arms of my still un-reviewed Cami doll...
...and in the lap of Johnny, one of my ball-jointed dolls.
Red is too big to be a convincing child for any of the above dolls.  I do think that he'd fit in better with an SD-sized ball-jointed doll, but I don't own one of those so I can't say for certain.  Judging from what I've seen online, Red was apparently a member of a larger set of M&M's-themed small babies.  These dolls came in a wide range of colors and facial expressions, including some candy colors that one can only get from M&M's website, like pink.

Before I dive in, I think I should say that I have NOT heard good things about Ashton-Drake's baby dolls.  One of Miss Emily's dolls (also named Emily) has a terrible root job on top, and Miss Debbie's doll looks only vaguely like her promo pics.  So I wasn't terribly sold on Ashton-Drake's babies, but when I found Gimme a Break in his original box for five bucks at a flea market I swallowed my pride.  He's not perfect either, as we'll soon see, but first let's look at his little face!
Some of the other M&M's dolls are yawning, laughing, or sleeping, but Red is wide awake and fully focused on whatever is in front of him.  He has a slightly pouty expression that I've seen many a baby wear on their face!  Red has inset eyes that are...oh, I'd call that shade "root beer brown."  He has eyelashes that are a little on the long side for a doll his size, a flat, wide nose, and little molded creases under his eyes.
Red's eyes look crooked, but in truth one eye is squinted more than the other, not terribly unlike Miss Emily's reborn Saskia doll.  Strangely enough, Red has no eyebrows.  This initially threw me for a loop, but then I remembered that babies have very fair eyebrows.  Painting such a feature on a doll this size may have been a fairly tall order since it's hard to get eyebrows right in the first place, so Ashton Drake probably made a good call by leaving eyebrows out altogether.  Red's lips are full (maybe a bit too full?) and delicately painted in translucent pink.
I don't usually show my dolls in profile, but here's what Red looks like in profile.
He's got appropriately fat baby cheeks, fairly large but well-molded ears, and a little double chin.  He looks quite a bit like a real baby would look at three months of age.  It's also easy to see that Red has little tufts of hair sticking out from under his hat.  After seeing Miss Emily's doll I wasn't sure what to expect!
Hmmm...not great, but not terrible either.  Mama tells me that Red's hair looks a lot like mine did when I was newly born...which in retrospect isn't all that good because when I was a newborn my hair wanted to go everywhere.  The doctors even tried to slick it down with Vaseline, which was fruitless and apparently made my hair look like a punk rocker's.  But as usual, I digress.  Given the fact that my hair was uncontrollable at birth, I'd say that Red's hair is appropriate.  It feels a lot like baby hair too, very soft and fine.  It sticks out here and there in little tufts and wisps, again like baby hair.  My biggest issue with Red's hair is that it is neither rooted nor wigged.  It appears to be glued down.
That's pretty cheap.  I can see why Ashton-Drake went this route, as rooting such a tiny head would've been a chore.  So why not go with a tiny wig???  There are better alternatives to just gluing fibers to a doll's head and calling it hair.  The overall effect is good, and one can't really tell unless they take Red's hat off and look very close, but I still wish Ashton-Drake had done something a bit different with attaching the hair.

Red's arms and legs are silicone like his head.  All four limbs are molded in a half-bent position, but the position can be modified somewhat by virtue of wires inside the body.  The limbs look a little slender for baby limbs, but then my experience with babies is lacking so I couldn't say for sure.  The arms are a little skinny, but they still have little creases at the elbows and wrists.
Both hands are molded in a closed position and to my slight surprise, the fingernails are manicured.  They're painted in the same glossy, translucent pink as Red's lips.
Regarding the legs, Red looks bow-legged at first glance, and he is a little.  His knees are bent and turned outward a little, like baby legs often are, but his right lower leg is also slightly curved.
If only a slightly curved right leg were the least of Red's concerns.  You may already be able to see the main problem with this doll, but I'm not to that yet.  The legs are molded very similarly to the arms with creases at the thighs and knees, and fat rolls at the ankles.
The position of Red's right foot may have some relation to the bowed appearance of his leg.  It's turned inwards a bit, while the left foot is straight.  The toenails are painted like the fingernails, with translucent pink paint.
Red's romper and hat are both fully removable, revealing that this baby has a rounded cloth body with soft stuffing...
...cable ties holding the head and limbs on...
...a huge tag with a lot of information (I may cut this off)...
...and the main problem with this doll:  some nasty stains!!!
This looks like the worst case of diaper rash I've ever seen, on a human OR a doll.  Now staining isn't a huge deal for me usually; all of my Living Dead Dolls are stained, and my other MSD boy Alistair has some minor stains as well.  It's just one of those things that you come to expect from certain dolls.  However, I'm less inclined to forgive Red's stains because they're so cotton-pickin' visible.  I mean, Ashton Drake COULD have made the clothes colorfast, but they didn't and I'm now left with a stained doll.

But hey, the clothes are cute, right?
I love this outfit.  I'd totally dress a baby like this if I had one.  The main piece is this onesie, complete with the red M&M printed on the front.
The onesie has a tag sewn into the left seam, and the tag has a bunch of copyright information about M&M's.
The back closes with Velcro, which I'm not in love with because it snags.
Topping off the rather basic look is a little red cap.
It's got an upturned brim, and the words "Gimme a Break" used to be painted on this brim.  As you can see, the words have started to peel off.  I think that looks tacky, so I usually put Red's hat on backwards like so.
Much better!  The underside of the hat shows some carefully sewn seams, which the onesie also has.
The carefully sewn seams and well-placed decal on this outfit make me wonder why Ashton-Drake didn't perfect their product and make it colorfast.  They had to have known the fabric would've stained; when I undressed Red he still had a small band of tissue paper around one arm, a sign that the company at least tried to prevent staining during production and shipment.

So what do I like about this baby?  What DON'T I like?  Let's see.

BAD
*Stained beyond belief.  Furthermore, I think this staining may be irreparable.  It wouldn't have been hard to make these clothes colorfast, but it clearly was not done, and my doll paid the price for it.
*Paint is peeling off the hat.
*Hair is glued to the head.  Again, wigging this doll wouldn't have been hard.

GOOD
*Clothes are cute and simple.  If you can find clothes small enough, it's possible to redress this baby.
*Eyes are well-placed.  It's not always easy to place inset eyes, particularly when the doll is this small.
*Well-painted
*Red's little face is very realistic, as are his hands and feet.
*Moderately poseable
*Looks cute next to my larger dolls

Basically, I like Red.  He's got a lot of cute details that make him a realistic-looking baby.  His eyes are straight, his features are painted nicely, and he's dressed appropriately for a baby.  His face has some charming asymmetry that real babies have.  However, Red has a fair amount of problems, all of which could've been remedied with a little more care and time.  His clothes could've had the excess dye washed out, or they could've been made of some sort of colorfast fabric.  His hair could've been wigged.  I know it's not easy to find wigs for such a tiny head, but as large as the Ashton-Drake company is they surely could've made or commissioned some little wigs.  Gluing the hair on makes me wonder if there was some sort of rush to get this done.  Lastly, the paint is peeling off of this doll's hat.  I doubt somehow that that could've been helped, but then again the decal on Red's onesie is staying put.  So I advise extreme caution when pursuing the Ashton-Drake M&M's babies.  The ones with dark-colored onesies will likely be stained, and not all of them may be as fortunate as my Red was in the eye department.  Don't get me wrong, these are cute dolls!  But Red has a lot of flaws that a more picky collector might not like.

Cordially yours,
RagingMoon1987
