Cabbie clothes for Valentine's Day

Yep, I've been places where I shouldn't have been again!  When Leslie Emily arrived nekkid I promptly threw her in the yellow Preemie-sized onesie that I got last fall.  She didn't look terrible, but I'd kinda like to save that onesie for a boy Preemie if I ever find one.  But I did learn that Leslie could wear Preemie clothes, so that gave me high hopes for this little dress.  And said hopes paid off!
THIS is a better idea of Leslie Emily's coloring.  Eventually I will figure out that this front room has better lighting than the family room.  Anywho, SweetBlossomsCouture supplied this dress.  I had an option of a pink bodice or a purple one, but Leslie looks like the purple type to me.  The hearts have teeny-weeny little polka dots in them.
The bodice also has polka dots, and y'all know what I think about polka dots.  LOL, polka dots make the world better!  Seriously, I believe that.  They add a little extra happiness and playfulness to a world that is at times dark and lonely.  Not that Leslie Emily knows.  She's happy no matter what, but she's THRILLED to have a new dress to wear.  Speaking of happy, Leslie wants Treesa to know that she's very happy in her new home and loves her new friends.  She hasn't mentioned a favorite friend yet, but she gravitates towards Candela Laura and towards the boy y'all will be meeting at the end of the month.

Speaking of Candela Laura, she's a bigger doll so she is a smidge easier to shop for.  She had her choice of any of my cute little Cabbie outfits (I'm slowly filling a crate of duds for my Patch), but there's one serious problem:  ALL of 'em are either the wrong size, or for Halloween, or for a boy doll.  So I turned to pac44 for Candela's new clothes, and Mama also had some input.
I could've had blue jeans, but Mama liked the pink pants better so that's what Candela is wearing.  The blouse has elephants on it.
Elephants make me think of my daddy.  I think I've said that before, LOL.  I don't know how well I can photograph the sheen of the slacks and the blouse's sleeves, but they've both got a silky shine to them that looks extra nice.
Can't really see it on the pants, but trust me:  they've got a nice shine.  Now all these two need are shoes...or something to cover their feet.  Treesa did send me some Totsy shoes, but Idalia Gale got those.  For the record, Idalia has bigger feet than your average Cabbage Patch Kid, but because Cabbie feet squish these shoes fit her fine.  Idalia is grateful.
I was unfamiliar with Totsy's That's My Baby clothing line, so I embarked on a search for more of their clothes.  Of course most of that stuff is out of production now, but it's still out there on the websites that I need to stay away from (a.k.a. eBay and Etsy).  They've got clothes, undies, shoes, and socks, and a few of the sets have kid-friendly jewelry as well.  I predict that some of those outfits will end up in my Cabbie wardrobe before too long, because they're cute!  Thanks for the heads up, Treesa!

Critters for Valentine's Day

It seems like every year the stuffed animals for Valentine's Day get both bigger and more original.  A few years ago I was astounded to see a sloth in the mix, but this year Wal-Mart has a big pink octopus.

Reminds me of my old friend Inky, from my days as a collector of Beanie Babies.  The big octopus is even pink like Inky, and he has his mouth in the wrong place!  Real octopi have their mouths on their undersides, where their legs all come together, and inside they have a little beak, like a parrot's!  Thus how a creature with no bones can deliver a nasty (in some cases fatal) bite to prey and predators alike.  On the other hand, this stuffed, nonvenomous octopus does have suckers visible on the undersides of his tentacles (Inky didn't have suckers).  And there is more than you ever wanted to know about octopi!  I like cephalopods, okay???  They look so unassuming, and yet they're so intelligent!

Lower on the intellect scale but higher on the fur scale is this snow leopard.  I thought he was cute, so I took a picture of him too.  The octopus couldn't help photobombing, LOL.

I love the shading on his nose, and the bow around his neck reminds me of the Ty Plush that I used to love dearly.  Ty Plush were the larger cousins of Beanie Babies, and some of them had bows around their necks.  My favorite was this one, Al E. Cat.  I got him for my twelfth birthday and wagged him around like a toddler for several years.  No lie, he accompanied us to Fort Massac one time, amid Daddy's protests that I looked "like a two-year-old."  I responded with a sharp "I don't care," and booked it to the fort, LOL!  If Daddy saw me now, with an American Girl doll on my hip and a nuiMOs clipped to my purse, he'd probably flip.  Or he'd just shake his head and laugh.  Depended on his mood.

Speaking of Daddy, I saw no elephants in this year's Valentine's Day pile.  Daddy collected elephants (ceramic, wood, stuffed, it didn't matter), and if Mama or Sister or I saw a unique one we'd grab it for him.  My favorite one had airbrushed dirt on his feet, like he'd just taken a dust bath (elephants do that).  But so far, I have seen no elephants.  Bummer.  I like what I HAVE seen, though!

Happy super-early Valentine's Day,

Another Valentine's Day

I'm single on another Valentine's Day, but that's nothing new.  I'll at least be with a family friend's dogs, so that's something.  To liven the day up I talked Luciana and Justine-Marie out of their respective loves for the Tenth Doctor and Mickey Mouse, and into some more holiday-appropriate clothes.

Hearts and polka dots and lace-up boots!  What's not to like?

Happy Valentine's Day,

Dollies for Valentine's Day

Several years back I did a post like this, with a number of my dolls wearing red or heart-themed clothes.  This year, each of my library girls has something red or pink or heart-themed to wear, so here's how they look.  Here's Xenia.
In addition to her omnipresent heart-shaped shades, Xenia is wearing a red and white ballgown from Hobby Lobby.  I have never used this dress in the four or so years that I've owned it, so it's unfortunately pretty wrinkled.  I'm hoping that the wrinkles will hang out, but with this stiff material I doubt they will.  Underneath her long skirt Xenia is wearing these cute shoes, also Hobby Lobby finds.  For some weird reason my camera didn't want to focus on these, so they're blurry.
If I had any complaints about this outfit it would be that it has no sleeves.  Valentine's Day falls during winter here in the northern hemisphere, and as a result it's still pretty cold out there.  Xenia could probably do with a jacket or bolero to cover her arms...but then again no one specifically said that this was a Valentine's Day dress!  The skirt has polka dots, not hearts.
Hearts or polka dots, the colors are perfect for today.

Lady Sadie is wearing an Etsy number, another gift from my mother.
Sadie, I have decided, shall be my uber-girly-girl, the one who likes to wear frills and the like, though she's just as capable of being a tomboy as Denise is.  Take a look at this fabric, though; it's got teddy bears!
So cute!  I love teddy bears.  Underneath her skirt Sadie wears these cute frilly socks and red pleather shoes.  The shoes are labeled "Sophia's" on the inside.
I love this headband, though it's a little hard to get placed over Sadie's thick hair.  It has some elastic in the back, and that helps.
Underneath her dress Sadie is wearing a cute pair of bloomers, but I didn't show that.  I don't like showing my dollies' butts.  Overall this is pretty typical of a garment from Etsy:  cute and well-made, perfect for any eighteen-inch doll.  Score another point for my mother, who finds some pretty awesome things for my girls!

I wasn't really sure what to do for Silver Bird, but since the Star Hoodie Outfit is dominantly pink I decided that it would fit the bill.
The Star Hoodie Outfit was the Just Like You meet outfit from 2008 to 2010, and it was one of the last meet outfits that a #4 like Silver Bird would've had (#4 was retired in 2011).  Silver Bird's ensemble is 100% American Girl, something I rarely do for my dolls (I usually throw in off-brand accessories).  A more thorough description of this outfit can be found on AG's wiki.  The leggings are a little shorter than I'd like for this time of year, but Silver Bird is more covered than Xenia and Sadie are!  She's at least got sleeves!

Z Yang's ensemble ties in with Silver Bird's a little as it's mostly American Girl-brand stuff .  However, Z's outfit incorporates the off-brand accessories that I mentioned beforehand.  Here's what Z is wearing.
Z's skirt, sweater, and vest are all Modern Mix and Match pieces from Fall of 2018.  Their AG-given names are the Downtown Skirt, the Sequin Collar Sweater, and the City Plaid Vest, respectively.  I think a better name for the skirt would've been the Stained Glass Skirt, due to this pattern.
Z's tights and boots are Etsy.  The boots are those cute little Ugg-style numbers that I got from Camille's Doll Spa, and I got the tights from there as well.  Silver Bird has also worn these tights a lot, and shoving them onto her proved to be a mistake on my part, as Silver Bird is a Pleasant Company-era doll, and her stout build did a number on the seams!  Some cat hairs are also visible (LOL).
I think that from now on these tights will be exclusively for Z and any other Mattel-era American Girls that I might drag in.  And since I hiked Z's skirt up already, let's take a look at the underlay.
This layer fits Z pretty tightly, tight enough that I can't make her sit without unnecessary force.  If any of y'all have that skirt, best keep that in mind.  Of the five dolls I think Z's look is the most fragmented; I can't decide whether that vest belongs or not.  Mama likes the outfit with the vest, but I'm just not sure.

Lastly, my dear Denise.
Denise is clad mostly in Etsy garb, with the main pieces being yet another gift from Mama.  She bought me the sweater and hat right before Christmas.  The sweater is mostly made of plain white stuff, but it does have a heart knitted into the chest with this soft eyelash yarn.
Denise's sleeves are trimmed with this same eyelash stuff, and both the sleeves and the hem of the sweater are scalloped.
I've crocheted scalloped hems like this, but never once have I tried to knit one.  I have, however, knitted buttonholes.  Yes, to my delight this sweater buttons up the back, which I much prefer to pulling over Denise's head.
Denise's hat matches her sweater, right down to the pink eyelash hearts.
The rest of Denise's garb is stuff I already had on hand:  the blue jeans that she wears with her spring and summer tops, and the pink Hobby Lobby boots that Xenia usually wears with her denim jumper. The boots don't really match the pink in Denise's sweater and hat, but...oh well.  I'm trying to do with what I've got on hand this month, and not buy a ton of crap that I don't really need.

And that, ladies and germs, is my crew for the year.  Come the end of February my girls will change from red and pink to green and yellow, with the approach of St. Paddy's Day and spring.  Wait 'til y'all see what Xenia gets to wear, LOL.  In the meantime I'll enjoy the warm, bright colors that my troupe is wearing and ask y'all which outfit you liked the best.

Happy Valentine's Day,

Poor little Tammy-clone!

A bit late for Valentine's Day posts, methinks, but this popped up at the library yesterday so I'm sharing her.
She is a pillow doll, quite obviously.  One of our younger patrons gave her to Coworker B, but Coworker B has no use for her so I'm taking her.  And truthfully, I only want her for her head.
She was once a full doll, and I can feel underneath the heart fabric where her legs once would have attached.  If she still had legs I'd just cut the pillow open and take her, and that would be that, but her legs are gone.  This upsets me because this doll is very clearly an old doll, old enough that she favors Tammy greatly.  She's probably NOT Tammy since she's not marked "Ideal" anywhere, but they do look alike.

Obviously my poor little girl is going to need a new body, and I think I'll add some paint too so that her cheeks won't have that horrid blanched look.  She'll be a work in progress, but I think I can turn this would-have-been-trash into a little treasure.  While I'm at it, I may try to find Katya, Kate Kite, and Elly-chan bodies as well.  It'll be easy for them, but this young lady of color may prove problematic.  It's difficult to find nice doll bodies of color, so wish me luck!  As a last little bit, this girl's name shall be "Florence" after Florence Ballard, one of the Supremes.

Much love,

Throwback Thursday review: Stilettos Kikki

I'm happy to say that even though I'm not a huge advocate of Valentine's Day this one wasn't a complete washout like so many were.  A very sweet patron treated my mother and me to a chocolate-covered strawberry apiece.  I got the dark one and Mama got the light one.
As the patron pointed out, it was a shame that there were only two!  What delicious and thoughtful little treats they were, though!  Malden Library is blessed to have kind patrons.

Now that y'all have eaten with your eyes, on to today's review.  This doll was my first Madame Alexander doll, predating Kathy Cry Baby's arrival in my life by a couple of months.  She's a Stilettos doll, and her name is Kikki.
The Stilettos were a very short-lived line of Alexander toys, consisting of redheaded Kikki, blonde Nikki and brunette Sami.  Information online is scarce, but I only remember this line being around for one autumn...I think it was the fall of 2006, but I'm not sure.  Either way it was a only for a short time, so these dolls apparently didn't catch on.  As an interesting aside, none of the three dolls wore stiletto heels despite their name.  Furthermore, there are few alternate definitions of the word; it's either a type of shoe or a type of knife.  Maybe Madame Alexander wanted to imply that these dolls had cutting-edge style?  I dunno.  Either way I was attracted to Kikki because she was the only redhead.  She has an explosion of fiery red curls.
One segment of this hair is tied up with a red satin ribbon, and two little spit curls hang down by each eye.
Unfortunately Kikki's hair is very close to Meygana Broomstix's hair in terms of quality.  Boy, I never dreamed I'd say that!  But yes, Kikki's hair was very tangled right out of the box, and if I remember correctly I think there was also a fair amount of spray mixed in.  I do remember that I washed her hair shortly after unboxing her, and that the washing took all the spray out but did nothing to help the tangles.  Heck, a week in THE PLASTIC BAG OF DOOM did little to tame that mess.  I even cut about an inch of it off and it's STILL tangled, though it smells nice and looks less ragged now.  I don't know what MGA and Madame Alexander were thinking, though, because this fiber is the Darlington Speedway of doll hair:  too tough to tame!  Maybe this unfortunate choice of hair fiber was why the line was so short-lived.  That and the hair is thinly rooted.  There are big gaps between the rows, rendering a restyle nearly impossible.
Underneath that pall of hair Kikki has a sweet little face, very typical for Madame Alexander dolls.
Such a shame that that hair is so hard to control, because Kikki's face is painted nicely and has a kind, age-appropriate expression that reminds me a little of my Dolls of All Nations Midori's face.  Boy howdy, has it been that long since I reviewed Midori already???  How time flies!  Anyway, Kikki's face sports big tan eyes with nice details like long, fine eyelashes and reflecty dots.
She sports a broad, flat nose and matte rose-colored lips that are painted into a delicate smile.  Her cheeks are lightly blushed.
Not a super-fancy face-up, one that is age-appropriate and thankfully free of painting errors.  If only that hair weren't so out of control!

Down to clothes we go now.  I would assume that a doll in a line called "Stilettos" would have cutting-edge fashion, but was this en vogue for preteen girls back in 2006?  Y'all tell me; I was so stuck on myself back then that I wouldn't have noticed.  Anywho, this outfit seems a little...well, maybe just a teensy bit mature for Kikki.
But then again it's not risque like Bratz clothing was either.  Kikki's shirt is a red and white halter top with a slightly raised front panel.  The halter bit is made out of fabric instead of satin ribbons, which I often see on smaller dolls and frequently get annoyed with, and to make things even better, the ends of the halter bit snap together.
The top as a whole is made of white...I guess that's polyester, but I'm not certain.  Either way the material is white with red stripes in a vague lattice pattern.  The neckline is deep and would be quite revealing if Kikki had anything up top, but as y'all will soon see she does not.  The bottom hem does reveal a peep at her belly, though.
The back of the bodice fastens with our old friend Velcro.
The interior is lined, which halfway surprised me.  Madame Alexander dolls usually do have well-made clothes, but it still was a bit of a surprise to see a fairly cheap doll with a lined blouse.
That halter top never would've passed muster at my school, but the jeans...I'd have worn these in a heartbeat.
At first glance they're simple little low-rise jeans with stitched pockets and a faux fly...
...but on further inspection it's possible to see that the material is sparkly.  I never owned a pair of jeans like this.  The legs are belled out a little, though that's next to impossible to see when the doll is wearing the jeans.
The jeans aren't lined all the way through, nor was I expecting them to be, but the waistband IS lined.  Furthermore, there's a tag that I didn't know was there.
I wish I'd found this tag earlier, when I was clamoring to find a source that gave this doll's name.  I practically never did find the name online, but here it is on the tag.  Name and maker and all.
The back of these jeans fasten with Velcro.
Sometimes flare-legged jeans look a little ridiculous on dolls since most modern-day dolls have slender legs and small feet that are concealed by wide-legged pants.  But in Kikki's case those flare-legged jeans proved to be a wise decision, as her shoes are sizable.
Of the three Stilettos Kikki's shoes are actually the smallest (Sami and Nikki both wore boots), but they're still a respectable size.  These are a spin on the traditional old mary-janes, having a thick platform sole and a double strap.
I always have a hard time getting these straps fastened, by the way; the peg that goes into the hole is a little too flexible.  The bottoms of these shoes are semi-hollow and have an interesting tread pattern.
Dang, those shoes are cute!  They'd be perfect with some sort of lolita outfit...once I learn how to sew.  Oh yes, Kikki also had a huge purse made out of red and white pleather, but she can't hold the thing so I tossed it in storage and I don't know where it is now.

Madame Alexander unfortunately did not make extra outfits for these dolls, which is a shame because they have unique bodies that are hard to clothe.
Now y'all know why Kikki's slightly mature outfit made me raise an eyebrow a little.  My friends didn't start wearing halter tops until they were about fourteen, and I NEVER got one because I never had the body for it (LOL).  Kikki's body sports a flat chest and a curveless waist, meaning that she should be about ten, give or take a year.  Little girls develop earlier and earlier as time goes by, so I could be way off with my estimate, but for the sake of this review I'm saying Kikki is about ten.  Kikki is made of smooth, hard vinyl all over, with a few molded details like a bellybutton and a gluteal cleft.
Kikki's arms provide some clues for the halter top.  They are straight and do not bend anywhere, and they only move back and forth at the shoulder, not in or out.
The arms thus always stick out to the sides about an inch, like so.
Such arms would render wearing a sleeved top virtually impossible, since Kikki's arms don't move close enough together to get sleeves on.  Due to this odd construction the Stilettos are largely relegated to tube tops and halter tops, though somehow Madame Alexander did manage to get Nikki into a blouse with sleeves.  I still haven't figured out how they did that.

For all their oddness, Kikki does have very pretty arms.  This hard vinyl took to a mold well, and Kikki has dainty little hands with molded fingernails.
The mold itself is also graceful; Kikki would have made a superb ballerina had her jointing been more flexible.
Kikki's legs are molded in a similar manner, and they are jointed similarly as well.  They rotate at the hips...and since these hips are cut at an angle they go outwards as well.  This is what Kikki's sitting position looks like.
Folks, that's a split, not a sit.  And furthermore, Kikki's bottom doesn't even touch the ground when she's in that position!  A more traditional sitting pose ends up looking like this.
As with the arms, these legs are well-molded.  Check out those toes!
The soles of Kikki's feet are almost completely flat, by the way.  She is perfectly capable of standing without shoes...or she would be if that hair didn't tip her back.  In order to get Kikki to stand I have to tip her forward at the hips, a problem that I usually see with larger dolls like Xenia and Mosi.
Strangely, when I put Kikki's clothes back on she doesn't have to lean as far forward in order to stand.
These same jeans do nothing to help Kikki's already poor ability to sit, however.  This is as good as it gets when she's clothed.
It might help a teensy bit if I could move Kikki's head up and down, but her neck joint is strictly rotational, and the only way she'll look up is if I turn her head all the way around backwards.
This motion does have one advantage, though.  Kikki can look up at the camera in an endearing way, with her head cocked to one side like so.
So far this doll has been mediocre at best, but at least she had lots of extra fashions to wear, right?  Wrong-o.  Lose all your money, go directly to jail, five points from Hufflepuff.  I think I said that once already that these dolls didn't have extra outfits, LOL.  Anyway, I was hoping when I bought Kikki that a nice long line of clothing would follow, but as far as I know nothing came of the Stilettos except the three dolls.  Thus Kikki is stuck in her stock outfit, with nothing else to wear...or at least nothing that I know of.  Some of my Yo-SD clothes might fit her, particularly Chloe's jeggings.  Jeggings fit every doll, but why bother with those since Kikki already has a pair of blue jeans?  Maybe this embroidered blue dress will work better...
Pardon me while I pick my mandible up off the floor.  Not only did this dress go over Kikki's widely spread arms, but it fits PERFECTLY.  It fits Kikki better than it does Chloe, in fact (Bobobie's dolls are always slimmer than average).  This makes me optimistic for the rest of Chloe's clothes, of which I have plenty.  But for now, I reckon it's time to wrap things up.

BAD
*Hair, while eye-catching, is horrid.  It's tangled and frizzy, very much like early Bratzillaz hair.
*Posing is bad as well; Kikki can't sit, can't wave, can't cock her head unless I turn it...not good.
*Clothes restrict what movement she does have
*Redressing is a near impossibility due to this doll's unique size and stiff joints.

GOOD
*Face is pretty
*Clothes are well made
*Sturdy
*Can wear some Yo-SD clothes

For the most part Kikki is a well-made little doll, with a pretty face and nicely made clothes, but having looked more thoroughly at this doll I can see why the line crashed and burned.  Kikki's hair is a living nightmare, though I strongly suspect that this is unique to the character (Sami and Nikki have straighter hair).  No, that hair is only the tip of the iceberg.  Kikki's posing is also lousy; she can't sit at all when fully dressed, and even when undressed she sits in an unnatural position that no human OR doll should ever sit in.  She can't pose her arms in many convincing poses either, and her neck only rotates.  Furthermore, this line had no extra clothes, and Kikki's stiff, awkwardly positioned arms make it extremely difficult to find new clothes, though I do have some Yo-SD stuff that fits nicely and I'm pleased about that.  I appreciate the quality of the clothes Kikki does have, as they're well made and fairly stylish, and she has a pretty little face that is unfortunately often obscured by that wad of hair.  So this was a cute line, but Kikki's hair and poor jointing kill my enjoyment of her quite a bit.  She just...stands on the shelf and looks cute.  So if y'all are into Madame Alexander dolls I'd...I'd skip this one.  If you absolutely must have a Stilettos doll I'd go with Sami or Nikki.  They have the same awkwardly jointed bodies, but their hair is at least straight.  This is the second time I've been duped by red hair.

God bless y'all,
RagingMoon1987
